| Music by Dennis Allen
Dennis Allen has done a marvelous job of creating a new tune for this venerable text. And once your choir learns it, they may never want to go back to the original gospel hymn’s tune! Speaking of gospel, Allen has crafted a vibrant work that captures the essence of this hymn, and gives it new life. The slower a cappella treatment of the opening page introduces the tune, then immediately shifts into a faster gear. Energy is sustained throughout, and your choir and congregants may find their toes tappin’ a bit (we believe this is okay and not prohibited by any Biblical teachings!), even adrenaline may increase. Sit back and enjoy this new gospel number, it will be a crowd pleaser and a choir favorite. Chords are also provided for a rhythm section, if so desired.
Once the choir has a feel for this piece, relax and allow them to enjoy its rhythm and vitality. Also, strive for freedom during the opening a cappella section, let the rhythm be fluid and rubato. Another option on p. 2, mm. 10-13 is to accelerando into the faster tempo, rather than shifting immediately into it at m. 10. Either approach is dynamic and enjoyable. If a rhythm section (guitar, bass and/or percussion) is used, do not let it overpower the choral forces--one might even try the simple addition of tambourine on the off-beats during the refrain as a simpler rendition.
